Reading the Gulag Archipelago for the first time, I was struck by comments that remind me of current events.
In Russia in the 1920s, the religious education of children was classified as a political crime, punished by imprisonment. You had to keep quiet about your faith. The poet Tanya Khodkevich wrote:
“You can pray freely
But just so God alone can hear.”
For writing this, she received a ten year prison sentence.
