What happened to Charles Chiniquy?

What happened to him?
The story interests me but theres almost no information about him besides tonnes of chick tracts! He went from a very well informed Catholic priest, to an anti-catholic preacher? Seriously? If you read the debates or writings of him before his ‘conversion’, he debunks everything he was to later publish as an anti-catholic! I am just dumbfounded at this trajedy, he seemed like a good priest!

He is famous for his book “FIFTY YEARS IN THE CHURCH OF ROME”, which is utterly filled with anti-catholic accusations. He wrote it 10 or so years after his conversion I think.

This website has some interesting information about him before he turned sour, and it has his book reviewed by a Jesuit:

Not sure if you are referring to the book or the website, but the website has a good debate with him vs. a protestant preacher and he debunks the preachers position. It just always makes me wonder how such an informed priest would leave the Church like that
