What happened to St. Joseph?

Was Mary a single mother? Joseph seems to have quietly disappeared somewhere along the way.
 
Christian tradition has always presumed that St. Joseph died at some point after the finding of Jesus in the Temple and before the start of Christ’s public ministry. If that is the case, then the Blessed Mother would have been a widow.
