A nice round number like 12. It seems they liked it even though there were 14 tribes.

Judah, Reuben, Gad, Asher, Naphtali, Manasseh, Ephraim, Simeon, Levi, Issachar, Zebulun, Joseph, Benjamin, Dan
14 tribes

Manasseh and Ephraim were Joseph’s sons. If you’re going to include them, you have to scratch him. That gets it down to 13.

I was just studying that section in some detail several months ago, including reading a number of commentaries (all Protestant, so I did have my saltshaker out). As you can tell from my sig, Protestants are all over the map on interpreting Revelation; however, there was a general consensus that Dan was omitted because of being consumed with idolatry (Judges 18, Amos 8:14, Hosea 4:17). Ephraim was replaced by Joseph for the same reason and because that tribe defected from being ruled by a Davidic king (Isaiah 7:17). Also, Ephraim was a very idolatrous tribe (Hosea 4:17 again). Manasseh was included in the Revelation list because that tribe was considered the faithful son of Joseph.

That brings it down to 12, albeit a somewhat confused 12.

I have a faint memory of reading that the Antichrist will come from the Tribe of Dan. I think it is from legend. It does not derive from any church teaching I know of.

OK – Thanks.

I’ve heard of all those explanations before.

But, they are all hints and conjecture on why Dan was omitted.

The scripture never actually says clearly that the AntiChrist will come from Dan.

Dan was not the only tribe to fall into idolatry.
Nor does the Scripture actually cleary state that because of the idolatry that the Tribe of Dan would lose its inheritance as a son of Jacob.

My point is that this is all based on some kind of
“Non-Scriptual Tradition”

There may be “hints” in scripture - but not clear explanation on Why John choose to re-align the Tribes in Revelation.

Comments ?
Disagreements ?

thanks for the help.

They get lumped in with the tribe of Fred.

Don’t shoot me for this, but I read somewhere that some scholars and archeologists have identified the tribe of Dan as a convert-nation related to the Philistines. In other words, they were part of the “Peoples of the Sea”.

I did not learn this in conjunction with the current question, but it certainly does allow for interesting speculation.
