It seems that a few years ago the Catholic Church condemned the Harry Potter books because of the glamorization of witchcraft, but now I have seen several Catholic sources promoting the series as a moral story with Christian imagery. Has there been a change in opinion?

The Catholic Church never condemned J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter books. In fact, the institutional Church never said anything about the books at all. What happened was that certain prominent Catholics shared their concerns about the series and other prominent Catholics disagreed with them. Now that the series is a “finished work,” it seems that the most serious concerns (the books promote the occult, the books teach children to break rules) have been demonstrated to be without merit. More and more, the general opinion is that the books may or may not be allowed by individual parents (as is their right to decide) but that they are not morally-damaging literature.
