What happens to crumbs of the Eucharist that are accidentally dropped and lost?

Sometimes when a priest is breaking up a big host after the Consecration, I see little crumbs breaking off and falling on the altar and even on the ground. This is very disturbing to me because I hate to think that Jesus is lying on the floor being trampled on! Does God remove the Real Presence from these little particles that are accidentally dropped and/or lost? If not, what can we do to help make priests realize that it is dangerous to use crumbly hosts?

The Real Presence does not leave the host until the appearance of bread no longer remains. That means that crumbs from the Eucharist are still the Eucharist and care must be taken to consume any crumbs that remain after Communion. If you notice that the main host is too crumbly and that particles of the Eucharist are being dropped, by all means you should bring this to the attention of the priest after Mass. He needs to know so that he can retrieve the crumbs. If this is a recurring problem and goes unresolved by the celebrant and by the pastor of the parish, then contact your bishop and let him know.
