What if abstinence-only and outlawing abortions actually made things worse?

The history show had an informative (if terribly liberal biased) show on last week. Good old Margret Sanger was their hero - and her work started in the 1916 - to liberate woman from pregnancy (birth control - but for her abortion was just another method).

I thought that Chain brought up good points, but I totally believe in making abortion illegal. People who say that they will occur anyway… I just say, so on that argument, we should legalize stealing? (or other crimes) But if we ever were in a position to render abortion illegal, I think it should be done with a hefty education program so that everyone will have the opportunity to understand. Lots of pictures of unborn babies 🙂 And lots of explanation that abc doesn’t always work, that sex is where babies come from, etc.
I highlighted the portion of your comments that I am responding to specifically. I have heard this mentioned before, and it has been debated in other threads on this forum. The argument is usually the same - i.e. “If abortion is legal, why not legalize (insert your crime here)???” The problem with this reasoning is that whatever crime you use in your analogy (murder, rape, etc) is universally recognized as being wrong (okay, 99.9% of the population recognizes them as being wrong. Such is not the case with abortion. You may wish that were the case, but society as a whole does not view it that way. Which is why I agree with those posters whose efforts are being spent attempting to change hearts and minds, as that is where the real opportunity for change will occur.

Not having read all of the posts, I risk repeating something.

Outlawing abortion is a fine idea but there is one complication. Illegality means that sanctions are necessary. Who do we send to prison, for how long and under what terms of parole etc.

Perhaps women who have abortions should be locked up in convents until after child bearing is impossible unless they marry? Should abortion providers be held in maximum security?

The consequences of sexual activity need to be explained and responsibility taught.

We use the same sanctions that were used in the U.S. prior to 1973. Those sanctions applied to abortionists, not women.

I never fail to be amused by this shibboleth. Do women become pregnant and then seek abortions because they didn’t know that pregnancy results from intercourse? In the nearly forty years since Rowe, four generations of children have passed through high school. Are you kidding me? How long does it take to say and how many ways can it be said pregnancy results from intercourse?
