What would the situation be if someone does not have the mental capacity to comprehend a God/Jesus at birth?

Does that mean God creates people who are incapable of understanding his word, so by his own word he sends them to Hell?

Damnation requires that a person be in a state of unrepentant mortal sin at the time of death. Mortal sin requires sufficient mental capacity to enable the use of reason. So the answer to your question is no.

So Buddhists don’t go to Hell?

There is no Catholic here who will tell you difinitively whether or not a person or people are destined for hell.

There is no way human beings are equipped to make a judgement whether or not a person is going to hell.

All we can do is use the information and guidance that Jesus left with us to determine what we should do to go to heaven.

In the case of said Buddhist- God will determine if that person is in a state of mortal unrepentant sin. If they are- then yes- Jesus has given us information and guidance that tells us they are destined for hell. But only God can make that determination.

What does being a buddhist have to do with “not having the mental capacity to comprehend a God/Jesus at birth?” (Said condition which I think would apply to all persons at birth, with possible rare exceptions such as St John the Baptist.)

My view of Buddhists are somewhat of a Gandhi type person, non-violence and ethical.

I don’t know whether Mahatma Ghadhi is representative of buddhists in general, but he certainly seems to me to have had at least as much mental capacity for comprehending God as I do, possibly more, so I don’t understand how this relates to your questions.

never heard that Buddhists lack mental capacity. there are dozens of threads on this topic and excellent tracts on the CA homepage, maybe we should all do our homework before we start another discussion

There are dozens of threads on the topic of whether buddhists lack mental capacity? I must have missed those. 😉

Uh huh…yeah…that’s pretty much it. :whacky:
Why oh why don’t we have troll emoticons?!?!?!?

What do you mean by being able to “comprehend” God in the first place? None of us here can really comprehend God as He is, we don’t have the ability in our state of sin. But there is a difference between knowing God completely, and knowing some of Him. I believe all life is born/created from the grace of God and therefore infinitely connected with Him. In a way, He is part of us all. He is what gives us life! In this way, even the atheist who doesn’t believe in God does know Him, but the atheist simply chooses to ignore and/or deny Him. I don’t think mental power is required for someone to know God in this way . . . if that makes sense . . .

After all, that would truly be something! Mental power = amount of faith ?!? I don’t think so.
