Oooh! Oooh! Oooh! Can I use this oppritunity to quote my favorite fictional Catholic? Please? 😛

“Science tells us how, it doesn’t tell us why.” - Agent Scully

I think that just about says it all. 🙂

‘What if science proved the “soul” was nothing but brain waves?’

You mean, the same way that science proved that our solar system had nine planets? Then a century later decided there are only eight? 🙂

What if science proved “you” personally didn’t exist? Would you still question your existance? And what if a man, in the middle of a forest, with no woman around to hear, made a statement; would he still be wrong? My wife of course insists, yes he would be wrong, simply on probability.

Reminds me of Chesterton saying that he would find it beautiful if the reason why the universe follows orderly laws is because God is like a child that keeps clapping his hands and saying “AGAIN!” I doubt that is actually good theology (God causing people to fall on jagged rocks mostly because he’s still fascinated by the idea of falling is a bit much), but its definately a neat image.

No, not like that. Pluto is still very real, and everything we learned about Pluto over that century is still true. It’s just a matter of terminology. Astronomers simply decided that Pluto could be better described as dwarf planet.

If it could actually be proved beyond doubt, that man had no soul (I don’t think science is very good at proving things, but let’s say philosophy or logic proved it), then we should cease to be Christians.

But to look for science for such a proof is IMO infinitely naive.

Wait twenty-thirty years and science will have turned everything we “have proved” today upside down once again…

I put this back up for re-emphasis.
According to the Catechism, paragraph 363, “soul” signifies the spiritual principle in man. And in 364, “human body…is animated by a spiritual soul”. In my mind, the soul is what makes one “alive”. The difference between human souls and plant and animal souls, is that the human soul is immortal, and will live on even after separated from the body.
