‘Go your way; behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves’ Luke 10:3
‘But Peter replied to him, What if the wolves rip apart the sheep? Jesus said to Peter: After they are dead, the sheep should fear the wolves no longer. So too you: do not fear those who kill you and then can do nothing more to you, but fear the one who, after you die, has the power to cast your body and soul into the hell of fire’ Second Clement 5:3-4

Here the words of Jesus are prophetic. For all the Apostles, except St. John, were martyred.

Indeed, persecution DID occur in the first few centuries
until Constantine in AD 313, it wasn’t until AD 380 that
an edict declared Christianity the state religion.

Second Clement is a first century letter, part of the Apostolic Fathers collection of writings. Not a Bible book, but a witness to the faith.

I think the third Pope was named Clement.

The author is traditionally said to have been a disciple of St Peter (Clement of Rome), don’t know about him being Pope.
