What is a conservative Catholic?

Recently, I’ve noticed that a friend of mine often refers to certain things as “conservative.” She referred to the Legion of Christ as conservative. Also she referred to those people at her parish that visit the Marian Fathers’ Shrine of the Divine Mercy as conservatives.

What does a conservative Catholic really mean? Heck I’ve heard of dancing, arm-swaying Charismatics referred to as conservatives, as well as Tridentine only people in the SSPX.

Should we even use labels like liberal or conservative in Catholicism?

For descriptive purposes, they might be handy. As they are, they are most frequently used as tools of division IMO.

I don’t think it’s a good term for describing Catholics, as it’s too associated with politics. However, it seems that when used in reference to religion, people equate conservative with orthodox, and liberal with heterodox.
