I would like to buy a good Catholic bible commentary, or even a good Protestant one, if it’s close enough to our faith. Please tell me the difference among the ones available.
(I have heard Catholic be critical of the man who wrote the New Jerome Bible Commentary and do not know if their criticisms are valid.) Thank you

I highly recommend the Navarre Bible series. The downside is that each book of the bible is a separate book (but that could be a good thing) and that they are not all complete (at least to my knowledge). However, dispite these inconveniences, it is phenomenal! Completely in line with Church teachings and gives the historical significance of verses as well as theological insight. Check it out 👍 ! Good luck.
God Bless!
p.s. be careful if you do get a Protestant commentary. You’d be surprised the things that can seep into our line of thinking. Some of these things may not be in line with Catholicism.

Scott Hahn and others are in the process of putting together the “Ignatius Study Bible.” Right now you can buy separately the 4 gospels, Romans, and Acts. (They each cost about 7 bucks.) The gospel commentaries are very good. I’m very much looking forward to the whole bible being released as a single volume.

The Navarre series does have a single volume New Testament, though the commentary is condensed greatly from what is contained in the individual books. The condensed NT is still a good resource in my opinion.

**A Practical Commentary on Holy Scripture By: Bishop Frederick Justus Knecht, D.D.**you can get it from Tan Books publishers.
ITs pre Vatican 2 so you know its orthodox and without modernist spin that affects the New Jerome Biblical commentary.
The advantage to this one volume commentary is the price its 30 bucks and cheaper most places. THe Navarre Bible while excellent gets pricey as its broken up in many volumes as are the Scott Hahn Commentaries.

Another commentary that gets overlooked is The International Bible Commentary: A Catholic and Ecumenical Commentary for the Twenty-First Century
by William Reuben Farmer
its post vatican 2 so there are taints of modernism but not as bad as the New Jerome BC in my opinion. Its unique in that its a rounded commentary with view points by people on differnt continents and contributions from othodox and protestants it is still a catholic commentary though and favors the church views of many teachings. Its very modern so you have to pick and choose the good from the bad but In my opinion its good to have resources that didn’t exist in the old days such as the Qumran skrolls and patristic writings that have been recognized the past 100 years that weren’t available in the Douay Rheims commentary or the older commentary which I suggested above. This one is pricey though its runs up to 100 dollars but you can find it in the high 60’s on the net. If you have to go with one go with the chaper one that Tan publishes as its 100 percent Orthodox and above all cheap.
