What is a gospel and where did it come from?

Is the literature known as gospel unique in Christianity only? Are there other similar types of literature during that time? Also are the origins greek or Hebrew cause I know in Hebrew apocalyptic literature was popular as many late books in the OT were that.
 
Gospel means Good News. I cannot answer your other questions. Sorry.
 
There are 4 Gospels in the Bible.

Mark wrote around 60AD to a persecuted Christian group under Nero in Rome. Mark wrote from Rome.

Matthew wrote around 8O Ad, in Syria. to a Jewish audience. Matthew was an Apostle.

Luke wrote around the same time to a gentile audience in Greece. Luke wrote in Greek. And also wrote Acts of the Apostles.

These are the three synoptic Gospels. Matthew and Luke drew on Marks Gospel. And of course wrote themselves.

John wrote later. John was also an Apostle .

There are other writings around

Ie the Dead Sea Scrolls written by the Essenes , who lived at the Dead Sea.
 
The term actually means “glad tidings”. In ancient times a “gospel” was a message from Rome, spread throughout the empire announcing the installment of a new Emperor, or the birth of an heir to the Emperor.
 
interesting do you have a link to this info? So gospel is a roman type literature? Makes sense since the romans controlled parts of Israel and there influence on the Jewish people were great. The gospels also are really about installment of a new emperor/kingdom or birth of a ruler (Jesus)

A gospel is a written account of the career and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth.[1] The word originated as a contraction from old English “god spel” meaning “good news”, “glad tidings (of the kingdom of God)” and is comparable to the Greek εὐαγγέλιον, evangelion[2])

In Spanish it is similar to the Greek “Evangelion” as we announce, “Lectura del Santo Evangelio…”

…so it seems that it is a generic term applied with some singularity towards the Writings about Jesus’ Missionary Works.

Yet, it is not a form/genre of literature.
