You are quite right. That term is not commonly used in the Church any more. The only people who still use it are “Jack Mormons” themselves! Because they have been out of the Church for a long time, they are stuck in the past, and tend to use the old terminology they were familiar with, rather than keep up with the changing trends in the Church.

This is TOO good to be true, Zerinus is nodding off!

They [former mormons] “tend to use the old terminology they were familiar with, rather than keep up with the changing trends in the Church.”

It’s like SHOOTING FISH IN A BARREL.

He says it himself: changing trends in his church!

Wow.

I never called myself Jack. I called myself Outta There!

Just so you’ll know, whyme, I was a temple-worthy and very active LDS right up to the day I turned in my resignation letter to the bishop. I actually waited until I got my letter informing me of my cancelled membership before celebrating with a glass of iced tea. I was never a Jack-Mormon. I never had a “word of wisdom problem”. That’s just what you people tell yourselves to explain why anyone would ever leave your “true church”. When I finally let myself realize that the church was a sham, I left very quickly.

You were offended! (That’s the other “excuse” that believing mormons make for us.)

The only thing that I have observed first hand, is that there are not nearly enough Catholics OR Baptists, to keep all the bars and liquor stores in Salt Lake City open. I think a lot of those good mormons are taking a snort when the apostles ain’t looking.

They just don’t tell on one another, this is called “not knowing Jack.”😃

You’d be surprised how many Baptists come out of the woodwork.😃

Could someone please explain to me what the term “Jack Mormon” means? I heard it means a practicing Mormon who also drinks alcohol. Is it the equivalent of a cafeteria Catholic, or is it a lapsed Mormon? Does anyone know where the term comes from?

Thanks.

Sincerely,

Maria1212
When my mother was a child, “Jack Mormon” was used synonymously with how you see some mormons (even on this board) use the word apostate. It was meant to convey a very negative view of a person and their standing within the mormon community.

It was in use very early in mormonism. For example:

“…here the attorney who simply uses discharges a sworn duty to his clients is proclaimed a jack Mormon and sought to be browbeaten because of his assertion of the law…” (Deseret News, 1874-10-21 Editorials)

People still use the term, but maybe it is localized to the Mormon corridor. Just google for the term and you will see it everywhere. But, I think most mormons believe it is impolite to use and so don’t use it, and stick with “inactive”. Whereas people who actually are jack mormon proudly wear the label. It has turned upside down so to speak.

A friend from Texas calls this a “Baptist Bar”, the sort of bar that is a disguised yet ordinary cabinet that no one would ever, ever suspect contained alcohol.

I live in an area populated by a lot of Danish immigrant mormons. Older folks who migrated to Zion in the 50’s and 60’s. It is well known that many around these parts keep a hidden coffee pot and stash of coffee. I love this sort of quirkiness. 🙂

Did you notice that I put a smile at the end of my sentence. I think that usually implies that I am in good spirits and mean no harm. Don’t take it too seriously.

I am sure that you were a good member of the lds church at one time. And I am sure that you had some good times in the lds church before your disillusionment. But maybe not.

Oh, don’t make the mistake of calling them Jack Mormons! They are a completely different breed from Jack Mormons. A Jack Mormon would not fight against or attack the Church. He may be inactive and not obey all the rules; but he still calls himself a Mormon. He does not actively oppose the Church.

You are right about this. But I wasn’t really being serious in what I said about the exlds posters on this board. They do attack the lds church rather harshly. I never feel the need to do that. I can see the good in the lds faith and what the lds church is trying to achieve with its theology. In a nutshell, mormons are attempting to live a good christian life by staying close to god through prayer and service. Any group of people who say their morning prayers together as a family, say a blessing on the food before they eat it, say evening prayers together as a family is okay in my book. And the lds attempt to live life close to god…And I am positive that god is pleased with the lds church. Are mormons perfect? Hardly.

But neither are catholics.

you just described the vast majority of muslims. so are you good with Islam too?

Thank you why me, that is of course true of “all nations” and religions and cultures, as Peter said:

Acts 10:

34 Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons:

35 But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him.

I still can’t figure out why two mormons come to a catholic website to spouse thier beliefs. One pretends not to be a mormon but is obviously a wanna be apologist. Here is the one question you need to answer. Do you believe in the trinity? yes or no? The lds church ( there are several breakoff branches who call themselves mormon as well? does not.The bible teaches there is one God( Deut 6:4,Isaiah 45:18, Isa 46:9, Isa 45:5-6, 1 Tim 2:5, Romans 3:30, James 2:19). The bible teaches that Jesus is divine as well (mk 14:62, John 1:1-3, John 8:56-58, John 10:30,20:28. Phillipians 2:6, Hebrews 1:3,8 1 Peter 1:2, Col 2:9, I cor 12:4-6, 2 cor 13:14). The Book of Mormon itself teaches the trinity, even if smith had a faulty understanding of it ( 2 nephi 31:21, mosiah 15:2-5, alma 11:44, 3 nephi 11:27,36, mormon 7:7). The new testament greek clearly stresses that Jesus is God in essence along with the Holy Spirit. This belief in that God is one yet that the Father, Son, and The Holy Spirit are all divine has been believed since the very beginning of christian history.

My own concept of the trinity is three separate entities. I still haven’t gotten around a trinity which is one individual, as I understand is believed on this site.

Mormons believe in the holy ghost, the son and the father. Catholics also believe in these three entities. What is the difference? I have no idea.

This site is antimormon, at least the antimormon posters on the non-catholic religion site. This is the problem. I am not a supporter of hatred and antimormon posts. It is not christian. Much better to tone down the rhetoric and embrace the god of love and to have an understanding of the divine mercy as embraced by Saint Faustina Kowalska.

I will defend the lds church against antimormons. I have mormon daughters who seem to do quite well in the lds faith. It is not in my nor their interest to allow antimormons to imperialize the ‘mormon’ threads.

The trinity is 3 people one being. God the Father is God, Jesus is God, and The Holy Spirit is God. They are ONE GOD. Mormons are polytheistic. 3 seperate gods are not 1 god. if you can become a god then are a potential thousand gods. If I’m an anti-mormon then you are a anti-catholic because you don’t believe in catholocism.I know atheists who do well and are happy, that doesn’t mean they are right. If a church sends out thousands of missionaries to beat on our doors to convert us then we do have a right to answer their charges. Are you an anti-protestant as well or is your prejudice just against catholics? Do you go to baptist sites as well? Do you believe in 1 God or 3?

QUOTE]

You’re correct, whyme, mormonism “is not christian.”

It’s a PANtheology, a belief in MANY gods (and goddesses and little godlets)

It’s a belief that Jesus and Lucifer (Satan) are BROTHERS.

It is NOT Biblically based.

It is a “salvation history” that seeks to rewrite itself into mainstream Christianity through soviet-era style revisionism.

And you know it, friend.

And for that I fear for your soul and pray that you turn from this man-made claptrap of the mind.
