Hi,

I’ve heard the term “lay apostolate” a few times, and am wondering what it is. Are there lay apostolates that I can support or help out with? What kind of apostolates are there?

God bless you all!

Generally, they are the same as Protestant “ministries.” The Catholic dictionary already uses the word “ministry” to refer to the work of the ordained (though in common parlance, “ministry” and “apolstolate” tend to be interchangeable).

There are apostolates that teach, work with the poor, work with children, etc. Your parish’s religious education group is an apostolate. So, since you are already teaching CCD, you are already involved. Amazing, huh?

in general activities lay Catholics engage in that serve the Church and the people of God through evangelization, social justice, outreach, charitable endeavors etc. especially those through the appropriate organizations, are apostolates. to be precise, only the ordained are actually ministers, or as some people interpret this, only roles in service to the liturgy are ministries, but common parlance is fuzzy on this.
