What is a Missal

I attended my first Catholic Mass at Christmas (I am 56 years old). There is a book that is at each pew that shows the readings and Psalms, etc. I believe (but I may be wrong) that it was titled Daily Bread with readings 2015. Is this what is called a missal? Can they be purchased somewhere? I couldn’t find it at Barnes and Noble but I did find a thick book called Roman Missals. My wife and I would like to get a copy so we aren’t so lost during Mass.

I will see the Father next week about RCIA classes but I think that they begin in September. I am going over a series of RCIA classes that are on YouTube and they are great and inspiring. If anyone could recommend any other material I should be looking for I would appreciate it…

The books in the pews are a form of missal. There are also Daily and Sunday Missal books. I like Magnificat – it’s issued every month, and has all the Mass readings plus history of the saints and other helpful articles. I found it very useful when I was in RCIA.
 
Those you find in the pews are typically called missalettes. The ones which people bring to Mass are sometimes called handmissals to distinguish them from the altar Missals which are the ones approved for using in saying Mass (and usually cost much more).

I use this Sunday Missal. It is very nice and has all Sunday readings for the three liturgical cycles as well as all Holy Days.

You may want to invest in a hard-back daily missal (from $50 to $100), which will take a little more work to learn how to find your way around, but you won’t have to replace it every season or year. If you decide to go a cheaper/easier route, be aware that some missals and missalettes only have Sundays, while others only have weekdays, and still others have both.

Another thought. To get a full-orbed Catholic experience, you might familiarize yourself with the traditional Roman rite (old Latin Mass) and also the Eastern Catholic rites (similar to the Eastern Orthodox, but in full communion with the Apostolic See). Each of these (including the traditional Roman rite) uses its own missal and has its own cycle of scripture readings.
 
The priest will likely just let you take a copy of it home.
For those unfamiliar with the large 3 year missals, these “missalettes” are handy and easy to follow.

I found the St. Joseph’s Sunday Missal today and bought it for my wife. I will probably get the Magnificat subscription too. I looked at the online sample issue and it was a great piece of work…Thanks again to everyone…

One last thing, if you are not embarrassed, ask someone at Mass (that you are sitting next to) to help you, as after some of the prayers, you have to skip forward to another section of the missal. You should have it down after just a few Masses.🙂

Even though I know perfectly well how to use the St. Joseph or the Novalis Sunday Missal, I use one of these and it helps me flip back and forth between sections with ease.

The Deacon’s wife helped us with that very thing today. Also like Phemie posted, we bought a small ribbon set that makes setting the Missal up ahead of time pretty easy and useful. I like it so much I was kidding her that I should buy the full New Roman Missal for me:)🙂
