What is a scapular?

I have a vague idea that its something you wear to please Jesus or show that you are part of a religious order.But what exactly is it?Can you put it on yourself,or is a priest neccesary?

Yes, you can put it on yourself.

A scapular is two pieces of cloth connected by two strings so that you wear one part on your back, and one on the front (at least that’s how I think it’s worn). Do a search for the “Brown Scapular” – there are others, too. You can also have it blessed by a priest.

The small brown scapular is an outward sign of one’s love and devotion to the Mother of God and an acknowledgment of her special role in His plan of salvation. It is a miniature model of the larger form worn by memebers of the Carmelite Order as part of their religious habit.

I was very recently invested with the black scapular of the Passionists and I now wear it all the time. The investiture is a small ceremony done only by a Passionist priest, and now I share in all the good works and prayers of the whole Passionist community. Wearing it makes me feel close to the order and their charism, and is a constant reminder to me about the passion of Jesus and all that it means to us.

There are many scapulars to choose from, the most popular being the Brown Scapular. All scapulars should be blessed by a priest, and some should not be worn unless you are a member of that order or confraternity, such as the Passionist.
