I keep seeing this notation on the saturday evening masses held locally as I’m looking up times online - what is it?
is their any difference?
is their any difference?
a Saturday evening Mass in anticipation of Sunday is not a vigil, it is a Sunday Mass schedule after the approved hour on Saturday evening and is an anticipated Mass, and it fulfills your Sunday obligation. My guess is the person types the word “vigil” out of ignorance or to save space.I keep seeing this notation on the saturday evening masses held locally as I’m looking up times online - what is it?

The Saturday night Masses fufilling Sunday Mass goes back to the Jewish traditions in which the Sabbath actually started the night before.a Saturday evening Mass in anticipation of Sunday is not a vigil, it is a Sunday Mass schedule after the approved hour on Saturday evening and is an anticipated Mass, and it fulfills your Sunday obligation. A vigil is the feast celebrated the day before a major feast or solemenity, as today Saturday June 28 is the Vigil of SS Peter and Paul and also inaugurates the Pauline Year. Attendance at Mass today (using the readings for the Vigil) or Mass of Sunday, in which this year the readings for the feast superceded the regular Sunday readings, fulfill one of the conditions for the plenary indulgence.
not really, that is not why it was enacted. That is the reason why Evening prayer 1 for Sundays and Solemnities begins the evening before but it is not the reason the anticipated (not vigil) Mass for Saturday was permitted. Sunday is not the Sabbath. Saturday is still the Sabbath. Sunday is the Lord’s Day.The Saturday night Masses fufilling Sunday Mass goes back to the Jewish traditions in which the Sabbath actually started the night before.
I never said Sunday was the Sabbath, but the Catholic tradition can be traced back to the Jewish tradition of the Sabbath starting on Friday night (which I heard during a catechesis)not really, that is not why it was enacted.
