If priests and nuns are given clean work spaces, homes, and food as part of their religious vocation, how is that a vow of poverty, especially considering that lots of people work hard and never gain that in wealth?

What exactly is a vow of poverty? Does it mean that you don’t formally own things yourself? What are the benefits from this lifestyle?

Thanks,
Lily

The vow of poverty is taken to mean different things to different groups. Some can own, some cannot. The degree of ownership is also different.

At face value, it is taken to mean that nothing is personally owned. Rather, everything is owned by the community.

It’s what you take when you get married and have kids!

Going through a tough financial time right now!:o
