I’ve just returned from our school’s annual Advent service (Catholic school and all…). Advent is a time of preparation- a time for waiting, expectation and hopefulness at the coming of the Saviour.
The first two weeks are actually in preparedness for the Second coming of Christ at the end of time. The last two weeks are in preparation for Jesus’ birth as a baby…
The whole season of waiting is often indicated by hymns like “Oh come oh come Emmanuel”, or “The Angel Gabriel”… It’s not a time for impatience… But reflection, contemplation, and preparing.
The entire history of the Jewish race (from the fall of Adam) was spent in anticipation of the coming of the Messiah. Advent is the season when we remember (in a particular way) this anticipation - and the preparation that goes along with it.
