What is liberal theology?

I read in the LA times that pope Benedict is strongly against women’s ordination and liberal theology movements in South America. I assumed that opposing liberal theology was a good thing because I trust our pope but I want to know more. I talked to my great uncle the other day. He told me that he did not agree with the new pope’s politics because he was trying to stop the liberal theology in South America. He said that liberal theology was basically a focus on helping the poor. He does not view the pope as a holy man because he opposes helping the poor when Jesus himself said to help the poor.
