Church Militant:
Well, Just what does it mean? 🙂
As applied to the Saints it is someone who asks for something before the King on behalf of someone else.

If I pray for you, I am an intercessor.
That is, I am asking for something on your behalf.

Agreed.

However, I believe that our intercession is fundamentally different than Mary’s. The precise nature of the difference may be hidden in the folds of ineffability, but Mary’s intercession is somehow more than ours. I believe that that is what is being portrayed in the story of the marriage feast at Cana.

Yes. Intercession is strongly supported in the bible. For example, in James 5. 14-16 we are told to get the Elders of the Church to pray for us and to annoint us when we are sick. And then, we find:

James 5: 16-18 " …The fervent prayer of a righteous person is very powerful. Elijah was a human being like us; yet he prayed earnestly that it might not rain, and for three years and six months it did not rain upon the land. Then he prayed again, and the sky gave rain and the earth produced its fruit."

Jeremiah and other prophets interceded for the people of Israel and Judah before God.

Not all of us know a Jeremiah or Elijah who can intercede for us, but we have access to the Saints in heaven, who will do this for us.

Revelation 4.4: Surrounding the throne were twenty four other thrones, and seated on them were twenty four elders. They were dressed in white and had crowns of gold on their heads.
Revelation 5.8: …and the twenty four elders fell down before the Lamb. Each one had a harp and they were holding golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints.

The twenty-four elders are shown offering the prayers of Christians to God; which is an intercessory role.

These are all very good and strong answers as to the meaning of intercessor. Now if you had to explain to a Baptist why we ask for intercession through the saints, how do you answer this question.

Well, I suppose I would ask my Baptist friend to pray for me. If he agrees I would thank him for his intercession with God on my behalf. Of course, he might reply that he can pray for me because he’s still alive but the saints can’t because they are dead. But I believe that the saints are alive in Christ, even more so than we here on earth.

Then I would offer to buy him a beer. Apologetics discussions can only get you so far. Or maybe, in this case, a Pepsi.
