What is more advanced science or society?

Science, to me, is not of this world but comes from some underground world. So I believe science to be vastly more advanced than our society.

Science is humanity’s attempt to coldly and mathematically understand God (if He really exists).

Society is humanity’s lukewarm disinterested march toward God while Evil screams “Retreat”.

The Sciences (be they the particular sciences or philosophical sciences) are grounded in the fact that existent reality is knowable in some way, that it is rational. Science influences society insofar as it provides explanations to the question How?(particular sciences) and Why?(philosophical sciences) insofar as these things can be known from experiences and abstraction. Society influences Science insofar as it asks the questions How? and Why?

I don’t know about the depth of influence exactly but science and society are no more in opposition than faith and reason. (unless you end up in some crazy anti-science society that is )

I wonder what the second to last sentence means? (I personally have this absurd image of morlocks scurrying out of the ground to teach us science).

As for the main question: I think that in a kuhnian sense society accidentally determines science; what we value is what we study. And from a scholastic P.O.V. that makes sense since the intellect can be led by the will and vice versa. So by a universal generalization, society studies what it wills.

But what is more advanced? I think that in being, society is more advanced and science is a simplification to get us to understand easily, what is in reality, a terribly complex thing.

Science is man wanting to bring himself to gods level but never will.

Science is primarily used by various commercial entities and the military. The average person generally has no say about science, especially military research and end products, like stealth bombers.

Massive corporations find ways to save money raising crops, or animals used for food or devices to make our lives better, such as through the medical research that goes on.

If you look at science, it is constrained by economic forces, not society.

Man has not changed in the last 2,000 years.

I agree. I look at it as being similar as trying to compare the weight of a car to the distance between the earth and sun. I don’t think any sensible comparison can be made in that way.

I disagree. We are far more advanced in Science than Morality. We have the power, through Science of radically changing the world. We posses technology that can turn the planet into a wasteland, we can remake nature via genetic engineering (and probably within the next 50 years, human genetics will allow us to remake ourselves as well). However, our evil natures have thus far made such technology dangerous to posses. We have radicals in many nations with the ability to nuke anybody they want, genetics is mostly used to make crops immune to pesticides (so we can use MORE pesticides), and so on. Which means that Science is becoming more and more a loaded gun – and since we’re still evil creatures, it’s like giving a bunch of 5 year olds a loaded gun and telling them to have fun.
