but on Ash Wednesday and on Good Friday there is also complete abstinence, that means no meat can be eaten for the principled meal, that includes milk (anything that comes from an animal)
We are permitted to eat/drink dairy products on days of abstinence. It is the meat of the animal we are to abstain from, not the other products produced. I had half & half with my coffee this morning, I will most likely have 1-2 cheese sticks with nuts for dinner.

I Googled this prayer book and it is traditional, or to use convenient verbal shorthand, “pre-Vatican II”. It appears that the practices and strictures contained in it have been superseded by more liberal fasting and abstinence rules.

The older practices are good (some would say better) and it would indeed be penitential to observe them, but it is not mandatory.

I may have to consider that! Thank you for letting me know!! My dentist also advised if I drink anything acidic do so through a straw.

Correct. Per the USCCB site, currently, the only mandated days of fasting for Roman Catholics in the USA are Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.
