What is "Religious Assent"?

Can someone provide a solid definition of religious assent? I’ve heard that Catholics are to provide religious assent to teachings of the Magisterium, even if they are not necessarilly infallible (though I still have no idea what teachings are infallible and which are not, I’ve seen much debate here regarding that).

Are we allowed to personally disagree with certain teachings but still remain obedient? For example, I don’t agree with a highway speed limit of 55, but I obey it anyway. Or another example, I don’t know if I’m sure that the use of a condom (in marriage) is necessarily mortal sin (I’m still learning, mind you, so please, no contraception arguments), but I would definitely obey the doctrine. Thanks.

There are Dogma’s that we as Catholic must believe… sure. But, we don’t have to understand them completely. We will learn them over time through prayer, study, etc.

Also, consider reading Humanae Vitae, the Encyclical of Pope Paul VI who discussed contraception. Read it and see if it makes sense…
