Hi while I was on facebook I replied to a post and in the post one person mentioned the Antioch church and said that it was an apostolic church that began in the first century. my question is "Is this one of the Schisms that happened early in the church and if so
can you tell me about its History?

There are five Churches of Antioch and three of them are Catholic in full communion with Rome! I will let others elaborate.

Antioch is in modern-day Syria. In Antioch, there are the Syriac Catholic, the Syriac Orthodox, the Maronite Catholic, the Assyrian Church of the East… I don’t know what the fifth would be.

All five are considered apostolic, with the Syriac Catholic and Maronite Catholic being in full communion with Rome. The Syriac Orthodox is in line with the Eastern Orthodox, while I believe the Assyrian Church of the East is one of the Oriental (non-Chalcedonian) Orthodox churches.

The fifth could be the Ancient Church of the East, which began as a schism with the Assyrian Church of the East.

Antioch (Syrian Roman Provence) was the center of the Christians from Jerusalem and other areas in early times. There was the Antiochene episcopate. From Antiochene come a few Chalcedonian churches: Maronite, Antiochian Orthodox, and Greek-Melkite, although the Melkites were not always in communion with the Catholic Church, and the Antiochian Orthodox and Catholic did experience schism.
Some non-Chalcedonian (Oriental Orthodox) churches also originate from there: Syrian Orthodox, and Syro-Malankara (joining from the Syro-Malabar).

You’re thinking of Churches of the Syriac tradition in general…in which case, yes, the Assyrian Church is East Syriac in praxis. The “Church of Antioch” would refer to those churches which have their see in Antioch, Syria. The five Churches would be:
-Syriac Catholic Church
-Maronite Catholic Church
-Melkite Greek Catholic Church (who’s primate is also titled Patriarch of Antioch)
-Syriac Orthodox Church (Oriental or Non-Chalcedonian Orthodox)
-Antiochian Orthodox Church / Greek Orthodox Church of Antioch (Eastern Orthodox - Byzantine, not Syriac, but still based around the see of Antioch).

The Church of Antioch was originally split during the Chalcedonian schism. The Antiochians who remained in communion with Rome / Byzantium eventually became effectively Byzantine in praxis. The non-Chalcedonians became today’s Syriac Orthodox Church, though a portion of them resumed communion with Rome (I think in the 1700s?) becoming the Syriac Catholic Church. The Byzantine Antiochians split in the 1700s - those who resumed communion with Rome becoming the Melkite Greek Catholics and those that remained in communion with Byzantium the Antiochian Orthodox. The Maronites are another branch dating back to a Syriac monastic tradition started by St. Maron…all Maronites are in full communion with Rome.

…and you all forget the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch, which is a member of the Eastern Orthodox family. We currently have Patriarch John X. on the Throne of Antioch.

In Christ,

I welcome you Bishop Gavrilo to Catholic Answers. It is great to have you and your wisdom to this forum. May I ask you what is your jurisdiction. I am an Antiochian Orthodox under the jurisdiction of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch with the Antiochian Archdiocese of North America serving her people in Canada and the United States.

Dear Brother,

…then you willl not like me baed on current political situation, though I pray the situation be different. I am an Old Calendarist bishop, namely the Archbishop of Prague and of Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia of Biserica Vlahilor Ortodoxă de Stil Vechi.

We were granted Tomos of Autonomy from ROCOR in 2011, episcopacy from the same. We are in full union with The True Orthodox Church of Greece (by far the largest Old Calendarist communion), Synod of Bergamo, and The Russian True Orthodox Church. Pending communion status with Synod of Milano, Genuine Orthodox Church of America, and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church - Kyiv Patriarchate. Our bishops are also currently negotiating with the Serbian Orthodox Patriarchate (Belgrade) about possible full submission (if they allow us to keep the Old Calendar).

However, I pray you do not sumbmit to prejudice, not all Old Calendarists are the same.

In brotherly love,
+Gavrilo

No I am not like that. At my parish we have several different Orthodox who follow different calendars but I do not judge anyone by their calendar only by their love and faith they have with the Lord and with each other. I am glad you are here and your contributions will be quite useful. I am curious Bishop Gavrilo of what you said in your post that you are a Bishop stationed somewhere in Europe? Of what nationality are you since by your posts you do have quite of knowledge on the use of english. Do you speak and understand other languages as well? You do have quite of knowledge on the Orthodox Church and I will like to know if you were always Orthodox or did you come into it later on? Again I welcome you to these forums and it is great that this is the first time I know of that I have corresponded with an Orthodox Bishop on Catholic Answers. God Bless you Bishop and to the ministry which the Lord has trusted you with.

Then bless you, dearest brother.

I am stationed in Prague, Czech Republic, former Czechoslovakia.

I studied languages, eight years in a grammar school, so beside Czech I speak several others, yes. I also studied a year of undergrad in Atlanta (GA) and then my Doctor of Ministry in Kentucky and my Ph.D. in California.

There are truly very few English-speaking Old Calendarist bishops in the world and I think I know them all. We are talking some two dozens in total. Not great, I know.

I truly wish there were more people like you. I am sending an episcopal blessing of heavenly peace on the wings of the Holy Archangel Gabriel, my patron.

In Christ,
+Gavrilo

Thank you Bishop for your episcopal blessing. I will keep you and to the Church you are ministering to in my prayers. May the Lord and His Holy Mother strengthen us to extend the message of His Good News to every place. I pray your stay on Catholic answers will bring to you many contacts that will further His quest in leading us in becoming brothers and sisters. God Bless you and your ministry.
