I am a former Protestant looking for a good Catholic study Bible - with a good concordance and etc. Which is the best one?

The Catholic Study Bible (NAB) has a limited concordance, but no Catholic Bible on the market has a very good one. My recommendation would be to use the RSV-CE translation and use the Strongs KJV concordance. Even though they are different translations, I’ve always been able to find what I need. Maybe one of these days someone will publish a good concordance for a Catholic translation, but until then, we can work around it.

More more info on finding Catholic Bible study materials, please visit my webpage linked below.

The best I know of is the original Jerusalem Bible (1966). A priest suggested it a few years ago. I got one on e-bay and have gotten 8 or 9 since (on e-bay). I have given them away as gifts. It is the large maroon hardback.

please check the stickies on this forum the first one has a link to “Which bible should I buy?” In fact, welcome to the forums, and please read the stickies on each forum before posting. For commonly asked questions, first check out the CA homepage tracts and library, it will save you some time.

The New Catholic Answer Bible (NAB) is a great one. Comes with lots of tracts which point you to the Biblical verses supporting Catholic theology and our interpretations of Scripture. You can get it from Our Sunday Visitor.

I also second Scott Hahn’s RSV-CE study bibles… RSV-CE is probably one of the best Bibles around. You can get them from Ignatius Press. Scott Hahn is a convert to Catholicism, former anti-Catholic Presbyterian minister and theology professor at Franciscan University.

Not to be a used car salesman, but…

Since Christmas is coming and we at Catholic Answers have an online bookstore, perhaps you could reference your friends/family to our Online Catalog to purchase your study aids. The books / CDs would make great stocking stuffers!

God Bless,
Ferdinand Mary

Just have to get the plug in there, don’t you?

I recommend:

Haydock Douay-Rheims:

Ignatius Study Bible Series:
catholiccompany.com/product_detail.cfm?ID=5165

The Navarre Bible commentary.

The Ignatius Study Bible series you can pick up individually for ~$10 a piece. The Navarre/Ignatius Study commentary use the RSV: CE translation. Haydock might be the best value since you can get commentary on the entire Bible for ~$100. The Navarre series can get rather expensive and the Ignatius Study series isn’t complete yet. I’d recommend going with the Ignatius Study series first unless you’re more interested in the Old Testament.

I also recommend Scott Hahn’s course in Bible Study “Understanding the Scriptures the Didache Series”:
ewtn.com/vcatalogue/pages/itemdetail.asp?itemcode=7474&source=categories.asp&category=BOOKS&pgnu=2

It’s basically a high school text book that takes you through the entire Bible. You can also check out his free study courses at:
