My family traditionally watches The Greatest Story Ever Told, but I’m looking for something new to watch. Does anybody else watch a movie about Jesus on Good Friday? What do you recommend?

If you’ve a strong stomach the Passion of the Christ would be thematic.

I was just reading a thread about that movie. I don’t know if I want to watch a movie that I need to read subtitles… I don’t like dividing my attention between captions and visuals. I also read that it doesn’t really touch on Jesus’s ministry very much, and the lacking character development makes it seem like you’re watching a stranger get beat to a pulp.

THE ROBE - with Richard Burton and Jean Simmons !

Or…BARABBAS with Anthony Quin … !

I think I’ll save that for Easter, but it sounds good! I also just found out there is a movie in theaters right now called Paul, The Apostle of Christ. I don’t know how I didn’t hear about it.

Gibson’s “Passion of the Christ”…but you better have a strong stomach and a full box of kleenex. No matter how many times I watch, I’m sobbing at the end. I don’t find the subtitles distracting at all. Honestly, I believe everyone should see it at least once. Very powerful.

I really like this movie. If you’ve never watched it you really should. (IMNHO) 🙂

The Passion of Christ is very moving, but I would not want children to watch it (18 plus I think).

It is an amazing movie. It is the Stations of the Cross as a movie. It is a real masterpiece and very, very Catholic. I can see how a non-Christian (or even a non-Catholic) might not get it. It focusses on Christ’s suffering for us and pulls no punches. The movie is directed and produced with a very Catholic view on the suffering of Christ. The movie is amazing, Mel Gibson seems to have poured everything into this movie. A real masterpiece. Watch it, but perhaps not with young children.

I think it depends on the child. I allowed mine to watch it the year she was confirmed–7th grade. I was watching with her and we paused and talked things through as needed.

I wouldn’t have allowed her to watch it when it came out (I think my daughter was in kindy)…way too young!
