Most people ask me this question above, including my Roman Catholic brothers and sisters in Christ. My best answer to give you and I give them is: “it’s a mystery!”

We Eastern Rite Catholics consider our faith, heritage, and beliefs so sacred, that it cannot be told into words, but rather chanted and sung during the Holy and Sacred Divine Liturgy.

St. Athanasius the Great of Alexandria, quoted: “God became man, so that man, could become God.” A mystery within a mystery. On one hand, you have Christ Eternal and Divine, within the Ever Virgin Mary the Theotokos, on the other hand you have Christ, the God man, living among living among man, eating with them and praying with them.

The spaceless One, which Space and Time cannot contain, nor control, found a space withing the Theotokos, the Ever-Virgin Mary, and living among man.

After His Glorious Death and Resurrection, He appeared before His disciples, fully alive, while His Divinity, still intact! Death could not keep Him, for He destroyed Death by His death. Spending 40 days with His disciples as the Epistle of the Acts of the Apostles says: “and spoke about the Kingdom of God.”

He Ascended back into Heaven, giving creation (humanity) the chance to join Him in His Resurrection and Ascension, binding the gap that had separated us from Him since Man’s fall in the Garden of Eden.

Brothers and Sisters,
The mystery of the East is far greater than what i wrote just now, it is not something to be put into words, it is to be experienced through the Divine Liturgy, the prayers, and hymns. This is small description of what the Byzantine Church is!

The Byzantine Church is the Church that stems from the ancient Byzantine area of the eastern Roman Empire such as modern day Greece and Turkey and Slavic regions whose capital was Constantinople who spoke Koine Greek.
There is no Byzantine Church exactly. There is a Byzantine Catholic Church tradition which uses the customs of the east but then there are the Orthodox who are not in communion with Rome however they also would be a Byzantine Church technically.
