What is the Catholic Church's teaching on the Death Penalty?

My understanding was that the RomanCatholic Church was for the death penalty as a last resort if there was no other way of protecting society at large.

I also understand that The Roman Catholic Church believes that in a modern western society a situation where a convicted murderer can not be incarceratewd is unlikely to occur.

Am I right?

I hope I am because it is my position.
