First let me say I’m not asking this so I can drink and drive. I actually want to know what everyone’s views are so I can be safe and follow the church’s teaching. For drinking and driving is it only a sin to drive over the legal limit? If so I assume it is mortal at that point? Moreover, when and where do we drive the line for responsible drinking and driving morally?

I know legally you can feel the effects and drive so that seems Like a slight warmth or buzz is ok but stumbling around Buzzing is not. It just seems like an incredibly grey area.

I am pretty sure the Church’s teaching would be that you follow the law for your state. (If you are in the US.) It’s a matter of law, not a grey area at all.

OP, didn’t you get enough answers to this in your previous thread?

Is it Drunk driving or not? Catholic Living
I always have the issue of what constitutes drinking and driving. Frequently I find myself having 2 beers over a couple hours then driving home. Normally, about halfway through driving or once I get home I always wonder if I crossed the line and drive impaired. I never feel drunk just relaxed. I know most of the time my bac would never even be half the legal limit. Not sure if I’m being scrupulous or not. Has anyone ever heard any good advice on a good rule of thumb for what being impaired const…

If your driving is impaired even when under the legal limit, then you’re expected to use prudential judgment and not drive.

Most people can drive okay under legal limits so they’re just expected to follow the law in their area.

The golden rule is that if you are driving then don’t drink at all.

It is a sin to be drunk. It is a sin to needlessly endanger innocent. Driving while drunk endangers innocents.

One or two drinks won’t necessarily impair you: but the more you drink the less able you are to judge whether you’re impaired.
So it’s best to not drink at all when you expect to drive.

It is a sin to knowingly break the law, unless that law itself demands that you sin.
It is legitimate for the law to specify the maximum amount of alcohol that may be in your blood when you drive.
So driving with more than that amount is a breach of the law and therefore is a sin even if you are not impaired by that amount of alcohol.

There is no safe limit; impairment starts with the first drink.
