What is the Church teaching on wealth?

What does the church teach on wealth? We live modestly but are not poor. We own our home and have no debt. My husband thinks it vain to upgrade our home. He is thinking about giving everything away. I don’t see how this makes us any holier unless we can actually help someone get to heaven doing it. Please advise.
