What is the Church's stance on ectopic pregnancy and abortion?

This is something that puzzles me.

In the case of ectopic pregnancy, where it is a life-threatening situation for the mother, and not a survivable situation for the baby, what is the church’s stance? These cases are treated as emergency cases and emergent care happens quickly and can be confusing for both patient and family who may be there to advocate on her behalf. An abortion–whether surgically or chemically induced–is, I believe, the only treatment provided in those emergency cases.

What counsel would be given that mother? This is strictly an academic question to me, but one I find vexing.
