What is the Church's teaching on taking care of the Environment?

My friend wants to interview me and ask me about my opinions on the Environment and how they have been shaped by my religion. I am Catholic and I feel as if I have always been taught to respect and take care of God’s creation. However, I am not exactly sure what the Church teaches on the subject of the Environment. I feel like humans have and are destroying the earth and I’m interested to know what exactly the Catholic Church has to say about that.
