What is the Da Vinci code and why are Catholics so upset over it?

It’s a book by a man named Dan Brown. He both claims that it is “fiction” but that all the documentation, and all the items presented as FACT are INDEED fact.

In essence, it’s plotted as a thriller with a love interest. Supposedly, a museum curator has been murdered, and the two love interests come in detecting the murder, finding out in the process that not only was Jesus married–to Mary Magdalene–but that this whole episode was suppressed by the evil “authorities”, that descendents exist to this day, that DaVinci painted clues to it, and–best of all–the Holy Grail–traditionally believed to be the cup used by Jesus at the Last Supper–is REALLY the WOMB OF MARY MAGDALENE, whom Jesus set up as the CHIEF APOSTLE.

All revisionist garbage clothed in breathless, sneering, “gnosticism”.
 
If you want more details, I recommend the book “The DaVinci Hoax.” I don’t have the authors names at the moment.

The reason that Catholics are so upset about it is that the uneducated, Catholic and non-Catholic, are believing what they read is fact and this stuff is blasphemous.

It is a badly written piece of fiction that I couldn’t put down.

It irritates people who have some difficulty with the concept that “fiction” is not supposed to be true. It is very, very effective at this.

You thought it was badly written? It certainly wasn’t literature but I thought it was pretty decent for what it was. I found I couldn’t put it down through most of the book. Then I got so tired of the cliffhangers that “ended” each chapter and the ridiculously silly ways the heroes escaped from each new crisis. I pretty well figured out the end and just wanted the book to be over at a certain point.
 
I read it, and found it somewhat compelling, but yes, poorly written. (Of course this is easy for the budding unpublished author and English teacher to say about the multimillion bookselling author.) The characters are flat and static, the “coincidences” too frequent and too elaborately staged, and the suspension of reality is repeatedly interrupted by utterly absurd circumstances and repeated unrealistic escapes. That said, I read it in two days flat.

I found it offensive on a number of levels, the greatest of which that it is filled with outright lies. Of course it is published as “fiction”, so technically they’re not “lies”. However I find it impossible to believe that it was written as anything other than an attempt to a) make a bucket load of many and b) discredit Catholicism as much as humanly possible.

I do think that the hubbub over the book is beneficial to the author, just like the publicity stink over Harry Potter books did nothing but sell more books.

There are far better pieces of fiction out there.
 
It is more anti-Catholic nonsense. If you can “educate” the ignorant Catholics then you can divide the Church. Many agendas can be fulfilled this way.
 
He claims his Anti-Catholic story is based on fact. It’s all lies and his story prays on those not educated in their faith.
 
Haven’t read The DaVinci Code, but someone loaned me a 1998 book by Brown, Digital Fortress, set in the government agency where I used to work. It was soooooo baaaaaad that it actually almost came off as a comedy.
