Now the kids are off at school: I have more time. My last post was just “thrown together”. So here is one with a little bit more thought: First, I found the quote I was looking for:
”upfront” from THIS ROCK July/August 1995:
Traditionalists are best known for their desire to return to the Tridentine Mass, a legitimate position for faithful Catholics to take. The sedevacantist sympathizers among them are giving Traditionalists a black eye. Traditionalism is not sedevacantism, and real Traditionalists need to sever connections with sedevacantist groups and with those who give direct or indirect support to sedevacantism.

The Catholic Church has 2 rites: “Eastern Rite” and “Latin Rite”.
Latin Rite Catholics are more commonly known as Roman Catholics
Within the “Eastern Rite” you will find 20 different churches: Ukrainian, Maronite, Romanian, Melkite, Chaldean, Ruthenian, Coptic, Armenian, and others. Each has its own bishops and each is considered a “particular church,” but their parishes are just as Catholic as the local St. Thomas Aquinas or St. Ignatius of Loyola parish. You can read more at
The Rite Not to Be Roman
The radio show Catholic Answers did “Know Your Rites” segments that talked about some of these Eastern Rite Churches:
search for pass shows here and listen here When you get there just type the word “rite” in the title field.
It is my opinion based on what I’ve read: That within the “Latin Rite” you have faithful that want to worship using the “Tridentine Mass” (the mass said in Latin) and those that enjoy “The Mass” being said in the vernacular (native tongue). Those that want to worship using the “Tridentine Mass” are sometimes called “Traditional Catholics”. Those that want to worship using the “Vernacular” are sometimes called “Modern Catholics”. There is nothing wrong with wanting to worship using the Tridentine Mass and there is nothing wrong with wanting to worship in a Mass using the vernacular.
The problem is that within those “Traditional Catholics” there are some that take it a bit further. They actually become “schismatic”. Those that are schismatic are known as “Sedevecantist” or “Conclavist”. Like the quote earlier said it is these sedevacantist and conclavist within Traditionalist (Traditional Catholics) that give Traditionalist (Traditional Catholics) a black-eye.
Personally, I’m a post-VII baby, so I’ve only known the Mass to be in the vernacular. My Dad grew up with the Mass being said in Latin. He liked the “Latin Mass”. We pretty much would go to our home parish for Mass. The Mass there is said in the vernacular. However, sometimes Dad would take us down the street to the other parish that had a Latin Mass. We always enjoyed it, not more then at our home parish, but we enjoyed it. Majority of my Sundays are spent at my home parish where the Mass is said in the vernacular. However, I from time to time find my way down the street to the other parish that has the “Latin Mass”.
My kids think its cool when we go to the Latin Mass….they just like “hearing” the different language…. Personly I want to go to an Eastern Catholic Church and experience that! There are some in the “Big City” near me. Even though the “Big City” is near it’s still a 2 hour drive. I have a 4 year-old and 5 year-old. I don’t think I could do a 2 hour drive for Church not with the kids. However, when they get older it won’t be so bad
