It is a prayer devotion said on a standard rosary that is believed to have been given by Christ to St. Faustina Kowalska (1905-1938) as a means of beseeching God’s mercy on sinners. St. Faustina recorded the visions she had of Christ and the Blessed Virgin in a diary titled Divine Mercy in My Soul.
