What is the Latin expression for when someone first comes to believe that Satan is real and then from that he figures “If Satan is real then God must be real, too”? I’m asking because this is part of how I converted to the Catholic faith many years ago. I had entered a very dark period in life as a young adult, but this was the catalyst for me beginning my search for God. I know that there is a Latin expression for this because I heard this subject mentioned once on a Catholic show either on TV or on the radio, but I forgot what they said is the Latin expression for it.

Just an aside, I saw Satan and that I was one foot from entering the gates of Hell before using my reason to view the reality of God and Heaven.

I don’t really see any logic in this.
I do not believe one can prove the existence of Satan.

Aquinas tells us that we can by reason come to know of God’s existence simply by the fact of knowing his creation exists. We reason from effects to their ultimate cause.
Aquinas provides 5 such proofs.

I don’t know the saying. People are confronted with evil and by blessing come to know God through reason and practical experience. We are talking practical experience.

The OP is about personal experience with spiritual matters. It’s not about trying to prove things to others. I was talking about my personal experience with getting to know that the devil is real. I used to dabble in witchcraft. That’s how I found out for myself that the devil is real. I’m not saying that I can prove to others that the devil is real. That’s not what the OP is about. I’m hoping that someone might know what the Latin expression is for when someone comes to believe that God is real after coming to believe that the devil is real. I’m not looking for anything more than someone who knows the Latin expression for this to give me this information. I’ve tried Google searches but haven’t been successful.

If you do the Google translate, it comes out “Si igitur Deus sit ipsum esse Satanae quoque.” I got 41,000 hits on this but I haven’t the time to check on the accuracy of the Latin. AFAIK, the closest we ever got to a statement by the Pope on this was made by Paul VI in his “smoke of Satan” statement but that was in Italian.

I’m looking for the exact traditional Latin expression for it.

I suggest you are in the wrong Forum then, try Catholic Living.

At some point someone will remember, I want to call it as I feel its on the tip of my tongue, but I keep drawing a blank and thinking; “I will not serve”.

It is true through personal encounter with the devil that one can be led to the truth of God. Perhaps this is why so many atheists do not come to believe in God since the devil leaves them alone.

I’m thinking that I might find the Latin expression in something written by St. Thomas Aquinas. I’ll come back to this thread and let people know if I find the exact expression.
