What is the main reason you avoid sin?

it was Rob’s Wife said it would cause too much trouble. I agree. Plus my life is so busy with raising four kids… who has time to sin???
:rotfl: THAT just might be my real reason and I didn’t even think of it! :yup: 7 children ages 9 mos. to 10 yrs no time to spare for the complications of sin, much less the time to do much sinning! I think not going to Mass using “no time” as the excuse is probably the only one that would apply here - and that’s where I go for peace and quiet, so no way am I missing that more than I have to! Wasn’t their some saint or whatever that said children are the path to heaven?? Well sign me up for that travel method! 👋 Who says there’s not a benefit to being barefoot and pregnant for 5 years and 3 months of the last 11 years?? (My hubby was kind enough to calculate that during the labor of the youngest baby. ) :hmmm:

Rob's Wife:
I didn’t vote for either although I do understand they should be the big motivators!

The reality for me though is that sin just doesn’t make sense. I find that sins are sins because they just aren’t good for you and don’t make you happy - now or after death.

In a nutshell, I avoid sin because it isn’t logical or beneficial to do give in to it. It is a big plus to hope it pleases God, but on the daily grind of life it’s just easier to avoid the hassle of a sin’s complications.
I think you have the right attitude.

From Deuteronomy:
“Be careful, therefore, to do as the LORD, your God, has commanded you, not turning aside to the right or to the left,
but following exactly the way prescribed for you by the LORD, your God, that you may live and prosper, and may have long life in the land which you are to occupy”

A life spent observing the Ten Commandments is a life much more likely to be free of major complications. And that was the main point in the first place.

Mr Spock was not the first person to wish “long life and prosperity” to others. God wished it on us long before Gene Rodenberry ever thought up Star Trek.

A life spent avoiding sin (at least major sin, the more minor we can avoid, the better) will be a worthwhile life to live.

I didn’t see it listed as a choice, but the reason I avoid sin is simply because I often don’t have enough spare time to commit it.

I couldn’t vote. I sin.
There are none of us without sin. :nope: But, one must strive to avoid it. I voted. I am with sin. I still avoid it. :yup:

i say both. i love God, and i don’t intend to miss out on being with Him after my life on this world ends.

we’re praying for you, hermione.

I try to avoid sin externally because it deprives me from taking the Eucharist, and for some reason I crave it so much. It is the food of my very soul, in which exists the presence of Jesus, and thus coming to church and not partaking in the consecrated Body and Blood of Jesus Christ to me, is like coming to heaven in a sinful presence…

Internally, I do it out of love for God. Though sin is so utterly tempting, the gifts that God has bestowed upon us is so much greater than anything else in the world. When I love God with all my heart, soul, mind, and strength, I have little room for sin!

It’s mostly b/c I hate the thought of wounding my Savior any more than I already have. Receiving the Eucharist daily has allowed for much grace to keep from sinning. I always rush to confession whenever I do sin however, because I feel desolate when I am separated from Jesus.

This isn’t very “theologically correct” and it won’t even be put in Catholic terms, but it’s something I’ve said for years. I avoid sin because repenting stinks. And as a Protestant, repenting only meant going to the altar and telling God what I’d done and that I was sorry.:crying: Now that I’m a Catholic, repenting stinks even more. I not only have to tell God (quietly so no one else knows what’s up), I have to tell a priest. ICK!!!:bigyikes: Don’t get me wrong, I am so thankful we can repent and I think the Sacrament of Reconcilliation is beautiful. I just don’t want to need to do it very often, if that makes sense. I also love Jesus so much I don’t want to do anything that hurts him, or hurts my witness for him. One of my favorite songs has a line in it that says, “Do you still feel the nails, every time I fail? Have I crucified you, Jesus with my sin?”

This poll is limited in it’s choices.
Sin hurts our relationship with God. Sin hurts Him and I do not want to hurt God.
It is HIS Grace that helps us NOT to sin.

So actually, God helps us love Him.

I try to avoid sin because I know that ever sin of mine is a stroke of the whip, a thorn on the crown, a nail in His hand.

I said fear of hell but sometimes it depends on what type of sin you are talking about. I don’t kill or steal mainly because I don’t want to hurt other people, if you are talking about glutony or pride then I would have to go with fear of hell.

Please be honest here. I want to want to avoid sin out of love for God and fellow man, but the fear of Hell is so paralyzing and terrible that it overshadows every other aspect of my life.

After all, Hell is ETERNAL TORMENT.
Hi Hermoine-

Please remember that “fear of the lord is the beginning of wisdom” and that it is a gift, not a curse. Unfortunately, you seem to have a disproportionate fear of hell which doesn’t seem to have the balance of a knowledge of God’s love for you mixed in. It almost sounds like it may be part of an obsessive/compulsive disorder (OCD). OCD is not that uncommon, and is treatable. As others have said in previous posts, you need to speak face to face with a spiritual counselor if this persists.
This fear, from a spiritual(as opposed to biological) standpoint, that you have is only legitimate if you are in a persistent state of sin and rebellion from God. Are you? If you are then you need to repent, confess your sins and have them absolved. This will give you some of the peace you are searching for.
On the other hand, you may simply have a form of anxiety or OCD which requires medical attention. Unfortunately, I can assure you that you will get neither in the full measure from these forums.

I hope this is helpful…

Phil

Sin offends God. We should always do what we can not to offend God. I would say that hell is the punishment for doing so.

Primarly it’s out of Love of God, and to not offend Him.

My eyes have been “opened” to “see” how REALLY bad sin is and how it can offend a Holy God.

I TRY to avoid it as much as I can because not only does it offend God, it can do great damage to the soul (believe me, it’s not a good feeling!) and it doesn’t make you happy.

Though my spirit is willing not to sin, my body is weak!

I understand and accept everyone’s opinion on this matter, however, I would say, that if you have a fear of hell and all the consequences of sinning, why not do it for YOUR WELL-BEING? By being happy and healthy in mind as well as spirit, you are fulfilling one of Jesus’ reason for dying on the cross for us. He died so we may live! Have a choice, either be a pharasee or be the person Jesus can help you to be! Following Jesus is not easy and he knows that, that is why He forgives us when we confess. Remember? His mercy endures forever. He knows we are trying to follow Him. So do it for Jesus so that His death was not in vain.

God Bless
