What is the mass, truly?

I’ve been pondering what the mass truly is. Any good writings, even quotes will do about the mass and why it’s the most important sacrament?
 
CCC 1324

The Eucharist is "the source and summit of the Christian life."136 “The other sacraments, and indeed all ecclesiastical ministries and works of the apostolate, are bound up with the Eucharist and are oriented toward it. For in the blessed Eucharist is contained the whole spiritual good of the Church, namely Christ himself, our Pasch.”
 
The Holy Mass is the Paschal Mystery of Christ’s life, death, resurrection, and ascension made present on the altar.

We get to participate in this Mystery as we are One with Christ in His life, death, resurrection, and ascension.

It is a nuptial, total, and mutual self-giving of Christ and His Church.

It is most likely that Baptism is the most important sacrament. However baptism is the first part of Christian initiation and the Eucharist completes it. Other names for the sacrament are:
  • Eucharist (Gk. eukharistia, thanksgiving),
  • Lord’s Supper,
  • Breaking of Bread,
  • Eucharistic assembly (synaxis),
  • The memorial of the Lord’s Passion and Resurrection,
  • Holy Sacrifice,
  • Holy and Divine Liturgy,
  • Holy Communion,
  • Holy Mass (Missa).

I would only add that it also represents our own self giving and thanks giving. We offer ourselves through Christ, with Christ and in Christ.
 
Some people recommend Scott Hahn’s DVD on this. I haven’t seen it because I cant stand his excitable voice. 🙂

In the words of Fr. Larry Richard’s, “time folds into eternity and internity folds into time and we are present at the last supper, we are present at the crucifixion.”

Christ’s once and for all sacrifice is truly present on the alter.

I carefully chose the words ‘nuptial’ and ‘mutual’ for that very reason
