What is the Muslim teaching on abortion?

Does Islam explicitly condemn abortion, or is it allowed in some circumstances? I always assumed Islam condemned it, but I’ve asked 3 Muslim friends today and they were all very squishy in their answers. They all said something along the lines of “I’m personally opposed, but I wouldn’t judge someone who had an abortion.” I’m sure you could ask many Catholics and get the same squishy answer, but it left me wondering about Islam’s actual position.

It’s considered a sin, and allowed only in rare circumstances like medical reason or on Fatwa and always before the first 40 days or the 120 days (i.e., before the soul enters the flesh), the clerics who issued Fatwas regarding that based that on this hadith:

Allah’s Apostle the true and truly inspired, narrated to us, “The creation of everyone of you starts with the process of collecting the material for his body within forty days and forty nights in the womb of his mother. Abortion is forbidden in Islam, and has panishment for the blameworthy.

About the sam got here hadith books contain some wrong hadithes whitch is not realy from the prophet Muhammad and He must confirm that the hadith is correct. Bukhary didn’t live in the Prophet Muhammad life period so he didn’t hear this hadith by his ear but he didn’t say who quote this hadith for him so this hadith is “Morsal” and is not confideable.

In addition Bukhary is a Sunni book and is not a hadith book for all muslims.

Friendship - Yes Sahih Al-Bukhari is a Sunni book, non-Sunnis being barely 10% of Muslims worldwide. I’m sure Planten would want to point this out as well, but the thing is you’re just heretics according to the vast majority of us, and the doctrine of the vast majority is what matters, so let’s not quibble over insignificant technicalities.

But to answer the question, abortion is forbidden in Islam, hence why it is illegal in most Muslim countries. The Hadith quoted by Sam has not been interpreted by mainstream jurist as permitting abortion. The only possible ‘exception’ (though jurists who make it do not consider it a true exception) made based on this Hadith is that it may be permissable to perform a life-saving operation on a pregnant woman in the first 40 days of pregnancy even if it would result in the death of her baby, though even this is controversial.

What I said about the hadith you gave from Bukhary is strange and you must research about Islam’s answer before be an Ex-muslim. What I said is the true way to understand the hadith is true or not. You are in Soudi Arabia and can ask sunni mullahs about what I said.
