What is the new age movment?

I keep hearing about it on the thread so thought it might be a good idea to ask what it is since I’m not 100% sure what its about. (I was homeschooled so for 14 years I only knew about Protestant,Catholics, Jews & atheists. the whole new age thing is new to me still. Though I get the idea that it is has something to do with divination because of one of the posts on my other thread. I typed it in to Google & way too much stuff came up. Do you guys know of any sites that explain what the new age movement is about? Thanks (Hope I don’t sounds too dumb)
 
It’s somewhat like other older mysticisms but has a different flavor.

It’s really quite common. You might read about someone reading auras, that would be a practitioner. Things like organic food and holistic or naturaopathic medicine are also rooted in New Age. Even Chiropractic medicine can have a New Age element. If the doctor corrects the spine to prevent nerve pinching and damage, that’s one thing. If he manipulates it to provide for energy flow that will cure or prevent all diseases, that’s New Age. The environmental movement is also full of New Age.

New Age religion takes from everything and if there is one universal, it’s that there is no universal.

One real popular New Age thing right now is the Law of Attraction, or one of the forms of that where people teach that the energy of your thoughs control the universe. So if you simply think the right things you will get your desires, money is a popular one.

One thing very common is if you tell someone practicing New Age religion that they are doing so, they will often deny it. For instance like I mentioned organic agriculture. People will say that isn’t New Age it’s not chemicals or something.

Well organic is not at all concerned with whether or not you use chemicals as long as they are acceptable to organic production. They don’t want man made or things that have been heated too high for the reason that doing so in their beliefs destroys the life force. They believe that organic produced food have more life force that will nourish your life force even if there is no measurable difference. Organic agriculture grew out of biodynamic agriculture. That comes from the 1800’s where a fellow taught that you could make composts that would cure sick land and thus produce more crops. He had several composts that were things like filling a certain colored cow’s horn with a certain plant and burying it at the proper moon phase until the time to dig it up and spread it came. You might think that sounds really strange, as do I, but there are markets for biodynamic food today, and many of the same agencies that certify food organic will also certify it biodynamic.
 
From what I gather, in the New Age of Aquarius humans get liberated from Catholic guilt and dogmatic chains in order to live happily ever after dancing naked under the full moon while singing the Kumbayah. They accomplish such a feat by believing in whatever “spiritual” dogma that doesn’t smell like Christian. Beliefs that all New Agers have in common are: Astrology, auras, chakras, yinyangs, extraterrestrials, reincarnation, karma, transcendental meditation, vegetarianism, natural medicine, therapeutic fornication, and the idea that everybody creates their own reality through their thoughts.

New Agers believe that their mission in life is to liberate others from the rigidity of Christianity that keeps their chakras tied up in knots while doing a wedgie up their yinyang. They attempt this through yoga, acupuncture, meditation, tai chi, etc.

Things start getting complicated by the fact that the way New Agers are expected to demonstrate a high degree of spirituality is by creating their own therapy. That’s why when you take a look at the bulletin board of any New Age bookstore of grocery store you come across all kinds of kooky therapies.

I don’t believe that things like yoga, zen meditation or vegetarianism in their proper setting are wrong or sinful, it’s just that New Agers have a way to get them all mixed up.

If a guru ever tells you that he senses a blockage in your first chakra that he can fix with a little poking here and there, run for the hills!
