What is the new age movment?

I asked this question on a different thread, but I think it fits better in this thread. (:confused: I’m not sure how to remove it from the other one:confused: )

🤷 I keep hearing about the new age movement on the thread so thought it might be a good idea to ask what it is since I’m not 100% sure what its about. (I was home schooled so for 14 years I only knew about Protestant,Catholics, Jews & atheists. the whole new age thing is new to me still. Though I get the idea that it is has something to do with divination because of one of the posts on my other thread. I typed it in to Google & way too much stuff came up. Do you guys know of any sites that explain what the new age movement is about? Thanks 😊 (Hope I don’t sounds too dumb)😊

There are many facets to the “New Age,” and no, your question
is most understandable. The elder boomers watched the
advent of New Age, and the many, in that generation - who stated
“Never trust anyone over 30” - are now approaching, or actually

Actually, I remember the very beginning of New Age.
Listening to the Age of Aquarius on the juke box in a tavern,
as a college student in the 60’s.

I guess you had to be there to understand flower children,
VW floral decorated vans, the hippies, the peace sign,
college kids taking over college administrative offices,
in sit-down protests, teach-ins, and street theater.
And all this taking place, at what was termed to be the beginning of the Age of Aquarius.

For my part, I thought to myself, at the time,
“No thanks. I’ve already got a religion.”

Eventually, many of the elder Boomers settled down into professions and/or careers, started families, and some are now grandparents. So 'New Age-ers" are now aging, and I think
it’s hysterically funny.

In the late 19th Century, the trend toward seances and hypnotic regression to “past lives” led to philosophical organizations that speculated about the deliberate, transmigratory evolution of humanity. They actually hoped that we were evolving into another species by deliberately advancing our consciousness and remaining aware of who we are as we progress form one life to the next, making ourselves more spiritually and physically evolved. This was expected to bring superpowers and immortality,as well as deep wisdom, and was seen as the step between human and god-like existences. By the late 1960’s the New Age Movement was big and loose-knit, with more people attracted to one part of it or another than really understanding the point of the whole thing. That changed in 1979. Authors and gurus made sure millions understood the idea: in the beginning of time, God (the story goes) split into billions or more separate beings, who were never really separate at all. The purpose was for God to experience everything. Now, to avoid destruction, God must reunite – humanity and all nature must realize their identity as various aspects of a single God. This can be achieved in uncountable ways, which is why they don’t care what people do or think as long as they are basically in line with the New Age plan to reunite our consciousness. If we do so in time, they feel, we will be powerful enough to survive natural disasters that are coming soon; if not, we won’t survive. They try all the time to increase their consciousness.
I used to be one but the absolute unfoundedness of the Movement’s claims and its failure to provide anyone I knew with anything but dissociative issues and fatigue got to me.
Lots of New Agers, like people of other religious movements, try to help the needy, and some are good at it. But that doesn’t make their religion true. So I went in search of the truth. Now lots of my old NA friends are really upset with me.
 
As the New Age advanced, we heard about Esalen,
on the coast of California, where - among other realities,
one was to consider aspects of ‘self-fulfillment.’

The ‘human potential’ movement. { I just glanced at
this article, but it may convey some info on the
‘human potentional’ movement.

Part of the New Age were the practices that accompanied same.

“Get out of your head and into you’re own experience.”

Clear, rational thought, expressed in challenge, might be labeled as a ‘head trip.’

Experience was all.

In the meantime, quietly, Zen Buddism was reaching the coasts.

Now, many decades later, there are all kinds of Zen retreats offered,
and many many websites are devoted to Zen or Theravada Buddism.

I don’t object to people critiquing Zen, but I do wish
that they had facts at their disposal, as they do so.

The ‘navel gazing’ - attributed to Eastern practice -
fails to note the Eastern emphasis on the hara -
an area slightly below the navel, thought to be a
significant area in the human body. [The *solar plexus,
I suppose?]

One places one’s attention, in that area, and simply notes thoughts which arise - not at all engaging the thoughts, just noting their rising, existing for a brief time, and then the receeding of a particular thought.

Why would one practice this?

To calm the stream of thought, and to note that life is a flow of phenomena. The moment to moment experience of man.

This is the source of the saying:
“Go with the flow.”

All created things arise, exist, and pass away.

Ultimately, the idea is to become detached from notions
of a perduring ‘self.’

Attachment brings suffering in it’s wake.
Detachment is said to be the royal road out of suffering of
all kinds. [Thus said Siddhartha Gautama, the *‘buddha’
----> ‘the enlightened one.’

Buddism is not, technically, a religion. No deity is acknowledged.

Western man tends to step back from experience - to categorize,
interpret, and evaluate same. Assigning ‘labels’ to experience.

Aspects of mindfulness - noting the rising, existing, and ceasing
of a given phenomenon, is valued, in Buddhism.

The sutras are the scriptures of Buddhism. They are an account of the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama.

I think that part of the draw of Eastern thought [in terms of it’s
place in the New Age] is the charming stories that are told
of early Zen masters. The entire ethos, if you will.

There is a well known story of Tetsugen and the scrolls,
which is perfectly charming.

It is said that Tetsugen wanted to have the *sutras *
[Buddhist scriptures] translated into the Japanese language.
After several years, he had collected enough donations
to accomplish this work, but just at that time a large river
overflowed, and there was much suffering. So Tetsugen
offered these funds to help relieve this hardship.

Again, years went by, and just as he had collected
a sufficient amount, an epidemic broke out - and
Tetsugen gave these funds to relieve suffering, once again.
Many years passed, and finally he was able to
devote the funds, that he had collected, toward having the
sutras published, in translation.
It is said that Tetsugen had ‘published’ three set of sutras,
and the the first two ‘sets’ were more honored than the third.

A good book about New Ageism (which is basically old pantheism and Asian paganism) is ORTHODOXY AND THE RELIGION OF THE FUTURE by Fr. Seraphim Rose.

You can even find it on line, but alas, I can’t give you the link.

:eek: I’ve heard that song before but I never knew what it meant thanks.🙂 That must have been an interesting time to have grown up in though. (A weird time but an interesting time)
 
I once was studying the New Age when I realized it confliceted with my Catholic upbringing. It is then that I said to myself that I had never read the bible so I purposed in my heart to read it through. It didnt take long in Genesis 3 when Adam and Eve ate of the fruit of the tree of knowledge of good and evil the the Holy Ghost impressed on me that is what the New Age Movement is all about.
Men deciding for themselves what is right and what is wrong rather than listening or believing God what is good and what is evil.
The New Age is not new at all but takes from the Babylonian mystery reliegion and eastern mysticism.

Your observation is good. The new age movement is just a revival of age old errors and sinful ways with the additions of modern idiosyncratic twists.

Modern man is spiritually empty and he often tries to deal with his emptiness in ways (i.e. New Age religions) that are false and even harmful. For me, Jesus is the only answer to my spiritual needs.
