I know what scrupulosity is. Is there an opposite to it? If so does it have a name?, What I mean is when you did sin and you think you didn’t. Sometimes I play games with sin. I am a sex addict and when I probably did sin I say I didn’t, sometimes there is “GRAY” area. I apply the 3 conditions to mortal sin ans I still can’t be sure. I have several examinations of consciences and sometimes they seem to conradict on another or confuse me more. When it comes to these sins how does one know when they crossed the line? People with this problem often have a distored conscience from years of sin. I am trying to fix this but sometimes I am not sure if and when I crossed the line from venile to mortal sin.
Could someone give me some advice? and is there an opposite to scrupulosity? If so what is the name of it? Are there any good books on it?
Sometimes I think I am scrupulous with some sins and the other way this the sexual ones. I need to get this sorted out. Can anyone help?

If you sin but think you didn’t that would be called “ignorance”.

Now there are two kinds of ignorance, “vincible” or “invincible”. Invincible ignorance is when you are ignorant through no fault of your own…meaning you had no way of knowing. Vincible ignorance is when you remain ignorant out of a negligence about things that you should have known.

If you are rationalizing behavior that you know is sinful that is not ignorance at all. I think since you admit to having addictions that you need to find a spiritual director that can help you through all of this or at least find a good priest that you can make your regular confessor and ask him about your problems.

Sorry if I did not answer your question.

I would think apathy would be the opposite of scrupulosity.

A lax conscience would be the opposite of a scrupulous conscience. Essentially, scrupulosity is when one thinks he’s guilty of sins of which he is not guilty. A person with a lax conscience does not think he’s guilty of sins of which he is indeed guilty.

I thought more this way too.

Also there may be some relation between apathy and sociopathic. It isn’t that you don’t care about right or wrong, it’s that you simply don’t even recognize it as a concept. You honestly believe there is no wrong.

I’ve heard people try to argue this from Paul’s “for me all things are permissible” but in a practical situation they always collapse when trying to claim that amounts to Paul endorcing amoral outlook.

We still have to make the distinction between those that dont know they are sinning and those that know they are sinning but dont care!

Apathy is probably a good word for those that dont care. Ignorance would be a good word for those that don’t know.

To the original poster: I am not saying that you are either ignorant or apathetic, maybe you just need more help in dealing with your particular struggles. That is why I recommend a spiritual director or regular confessor. Just remember that our behavior is all about making the right decisions which usually means changing certain behavioral patterns that we have become acustomed to.

Indifference, and relativism are two that come to mind.

presumption: assuming that God will overlook even the gravest of sins just because the sinner views him or her self as an all around nice person. . .

For some reason I thought the Baltimore Catechism had something to say about a lax conscience being the opposite of a scrupulous conscience, but I can’t find it.

I did find this confession manual, which talks about lax and scrupulous consciences.

“Scrupulous” is used in two senses. The first sense refers to a conscientious and painstaking approach to something. The second sense refers to having, and applying, principles.

In examining our conscience, we must be scrupulous in both senses: It cannot be slipshod and haphazard, and it must be guided by the principles set out by God through his Church. So the opposite can involve either a lack of effort, a lack of principle, or a combination of the two.
