What is the process for determining particulars of liturgy and music in a parish?

Can someone enlighten me as to how decisions are made about music, hymn selection, number and kind of lay ministers used, etc. at Mass?

If one has concerns, to whom are they addressed?

the pastor is the liturgist for the parish. there is no lay equivalent. He can delegate that responsibility, but he is the authority.

Some parishes appoint liturgical committees, in my parish this is done by the parish coordinator. This allows her to move her agenda with the liturgy and not take responsibility for it; it is quite clever and almost entertaining seeing what next they will invent as a new liturgy.

The pastor is in charge, so any concerns should be put to him. If there is no pastor then the person in charge of the parish usually is the person to talk to.

Generally the liturgy should follow the GIRM and music should be orthodox with respect to worship.

I cant recall the web site but my wife usea it to pick the music for Mass. The website lists songs from the most common hymnals used that tie in to that Sundays readings. This is not a rule in our parish, howver, as at one mass the lady who plays just picks her favorites-a lot of which have nothing to do with the Readings.

Thanks for replies. This is interesting. Puzzleannie states what I know to be true. Scylla states what I suspect is happening with regard to the whole of the liturgy. And, estesbob leads me to believe that music is left up to the music minister.

Given this, is it appropriate to inquire with the pastor? Would it be correct to assume that he is perfectly fine with what is happening at Mass?

I have so many questions. I don’t want to post them in an open forum because I don’t want alot of arguing and bashing to happen as often does BUT, neither do I want to question our priest and have it sound like I’m complaining or questioning his authority or faithfulness. Is it okay to ask anyone to email me privately if they are willing to help answer questions?
