I have a question. I am currently helping out an RCIA class as they go through the Inquiry phase. One of the candidates asked a question about godparents? I have to be honest, it stumped me. What is a godparent for and where did they come into common usage? The only answer that I can think of is that godparents are to aid and support the newly baptised child through his/her faith formation, as well as supporting and nurturing the parents of the child with their faith. However, I cannot find any instance in history to p(name removed by moderator)oint the beginning of the discipline of godparents. Can you please cite any Biblical passages or CCC sections that point to the usage godparents. Also, are godparents, or Christian Witnesses (for non-Catholic godparents), required for Baptism?
