{second inning} Batter up?

I know this, for some, is a very old and perhaps tired issue and I apologize for bring it up once again, but there is a significant philosophical concern for me in this issue.

In most Protestant churches, if not all, the “body of Christ” is said to be the body of Christianity itself. To me, this would mean to truly “consume the body of Christ” would mean that we would have to re-instigate human sacrifice and now and then invite a Christian for dinner perhaps with a little wine sauce.

To be honest, I never got a clear picture of how the “blood of Christ” is understood among the Protestant and have become a little hesitant to ask, but I suspect an answer like “the Holy Spirit, of course” might be the reply.

The well-known ritual of consuming a small bit of cracker and a little wine/grape juice/cool-aid, I have always accepted as merely a ritual and reminder. But then I heard a Catholic proclaim that “no, the consecrated cracker and wine are truly the real body and blood of Jesus himself very literally and if you do not believe that, you are not to participate.”

I could take that as a truth if I were to neglect some far deeper concerns. Of course, I have my own understanding that I demand upon no one, but I would like to know exactly how the Catholic really understands these things, or it is just another “mystery to never be revealed” or “choose what suits your fancy”?

I have no doubt that Jesus had a specific meaning and if misunderstood (by whatever cause) and thus the Church not truly obeying Jesus himself, I would have a serious issue.

I suspect the most common answer would be something like, “it is what the Church tells us it is” and although this might be true, it merely means that the speaker doesn’t really know or understand a very significant concern. 😊

Play Ball! 😃

I don’t see the big deal. I had a whole box of Jesus yesterday and he was delicious. 😃

I believe I agree with your signature, friend. Don’t make false or ignorant claims to me either.

…and I believe this will answer some of your questions, OP. It is the Catholic view. I do not question the mystery of God because Him giving Himself as a sacrifice so that we may live is enough for me.

God Bless you both.

Thank you lil_flower_luv

So after reading that link, I can see that;

Rev. Daniel Maher believes that the consecrated cracker and wine are literally the flesh and blood of Jesus.

Well he was speaking for our church as a whole…but if you want more information, the Catechism of the Catholic Church can help you with that: vatican.va/archive/ccc_css/archive/catechism/p2s2c1a3.htm

Just a tid-bit:

I. THE EUCHARIST - SOURCE AND SUMMIT OF ECCLESIAL LIFE

1324 **The Eucharist is “the source and summit of the Christian life.”**136 "The other sacraments, and indeed all ecclesiastical ministries and works of the apostolate, are bound up with the Eucharist and are oriented toward it. For in the blessed Eucharist is contained the whole spiritual good of the Church, namely Christ himself, our Pasch."137

1325 "The Eucharist is the efficacious sign and sublime cause of that communion in the divine life and that unity of the People of God by which the Church is kept in being. It is the culmination both of God’s action sanctifying the world in Christ and of the worship men offer to Christ and through him to the Father in the Holy Spirit."138

1326 Finally, by the Eucharistic celebration we already unite ourselves with the heavenly liturgy and anticipate eternal life, when God will be all in all.139

1327 In brief, the Eucharist is the sum and summary of our faith: "Our way of thinking is attuned to the Eucharist, and the Eucharist in turn confirms our way of thinking."140

I’m sorry if this is too much to digest…I really don’t know specifically what you’re asking…but if I give you all the information on the Eucharist, I can’t go wrong, can I? :o

How was my comment ignorant?? It was obviously a joke.
A very cruel joke. A joke that some people can take as an insult to what we believe. If you would like to know more about what we believe the Eucharist is, then please read some of my above posts. Otherwise, please keep the negative comments to yourself.

Thank you 🙂

With this, you express the importance of the Eucharist. I agree with such importance and thus I have asked this question.

What I am asking is confirmation, from hopefully more, that in Catholicism, the consecrated cracker and wine are to be accepted as literally the flesh and blood of Jesus.

Or are there other beliefs allowed?

Thank you 🙂
You’re very welcome.

So you would like more Catholics to confirm this? I can easily make that happen. 🙂
Or are there other beliefs allowed?
What kind of beliefs are you referring to? What do you believe?

Thank you 🙂

consecrated host, not cracker. Please be respectful enough to learn the terminology. Please continue.

Please try not to presume or ask for respect not yet earned.

The word “cracker” was chosen for a reason. The word “host”, in this discussion, will not do (yet).

Thank you and thank each of you for your participation 🙂

Without further or variant replies, the “Hard Ball” score is as follows (meaning no disrespect by using such a metaphor);

Catholic Church - 1 Homerun 👍
Catholic Church - 1 Strikeout

Second inning, Devil still on the mound 🤷

How you interpret the words of Jesus depends on what you believe. If you believe He was a lunatic then obviously the words are senseless. If you believe He is the Son of God then you take his words literally: “This is my body” and “This is my blood”. Why would He talk in riddles on the eve of His death "and not mean what He said?

If you don’t believe Jesus was a lunatic or is the Son of God you have to explain what kind of man you think He was. Otherwise any discussion of the meaning of His words is pointless…
