What is the San Damiano Cross?

I really like the style of the San Damiano Cross. I would like to get one. But I do not know what it means. I see that the “structure” is different - is there meaning in that? And I see that it has elaborate paintings, too. What are the paintings?

It’s a six foot tall “icon cross”, strongly associated with Franciscan groups, such as this one…
