Greetings,

What is the large structure surrounding the altar in St. Peter’s basilica? I’m asking about the one that has the twisting pillars that hold a roof like top. I’m curious to know what it signifies or what it’s symbolic of. Thanks.

Pax Tecum,
Rocco

Hi Rocco,

The baldaquin or canopy, as it is called, is basically a cover over the altar which designates it as special and worthy of distinction and protection.
