Hi,
I was just wondering: what is the sin: the act of sterilization itself, the sexual act of married people that are sterilized or both?
Jose

the act of sterilization is the sin of mutilation which is expressly forbidden and the sin of deliberately preventing conception, which is expressly forbidden. each sexual act is a sin as long as the couple persists in desire to prevent conception. If they have repented, confessed and been absolved there is no sin, as long as they are sincere in their contrition, even if surgical reversal is not attempted.

Both.

However, we need to distinguish between sterilization does as an act of mutilation (ie, tubes tied, vasectomy) and sterilization that is the result of a valid medical procedure (hysterectomy). In the latter case the unintended consequence is that the woman is sterile. This is not sinful, nor are marital acts engaged in by the couple.
